Did anyone else catch the "sneak preview" episode of Mystery Diner last night? I remember this show from last year, but never actually saw it. If you haven't seen it, the show follows a consultant group that goes into restaurants to figure out what mischief the employees are getting into. They use hidden cameras, face customers, and bogus employees to uncover theft, bad customer service, and other malfeasance. I was not impressed.
1) There was nowhere near enough content to fill a 30 minute show. They recapped the entire show after every single commercial break -- if I saw that Craigslist ad one more time I was going to scream.
2) The acting was horrible. The owner of the restaurant was clearly repeating lines that had been fed to him, and acting outraged. I don't know how much of the show was staged or fake, but it all seemed ridiculous.
3) There was no suspense or nuance. From the beginning we knew that the chef was shady. Then they manage to catch him doing shady thing after shady thing, all in one shift. It was overdone. He steals, he ignores customers, he serves food that was on the floor. Insane, and transparent.
What did you all think?
