Had an out of town guest a wee bit ago, ended up at Muse for dinner. Been there twice before, great restaurant building in Kensington that never seems to survive very long, I'm sure every city has Bermuda Triangle restaurants.
Appetizer - Escargot with mushrooms, cream based sauce. Fantastic dish, had it before. If you have any interest in snails, it's worth a go, rich, with absolutley dynamite snails. No regrets there, although the portion is considerable, so sharing it is a good idea.
Dinner, I had the special of the evening from the summer menu, a halibut with a pesto sauce with a salad and grapefruit. It was a nicely cooked piece of fish, but the pesto didn't really have much to say about the fish, and vice versa. The salad was lame, like a 5 minute summer salad from the TV guide. Someone needs to remind these restaurants that those prepackaged salad mixes with rocket and other greens are not always the right choice.
My dining buddy had the salmon with rissoto.
Very buttery, not as good as the barley rissoto I've had before at Muse. The salmon was top notch, I gather it was kind of special, wild salmon that they were only serving that week, until it ran out.
Service was okay, the waiter was a bit much but the staff in general were excellent. As far as our table waiter knew, everything on the menu was "seared and then finished in the oven".
Wasn't a bad night out, but Muse was achieving pretty high ranks for me before, and I guess I just don't share the taste for the summer menu that I do for the more rustic cuisine they were serving during the winter.
