Even though I was chilled through and through (along with the rest of the California contingent at the American Royal), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to give Murray’s Ice Cream a try. I stopped by Thursday night on my way to dinner . . . dessert being of much higher priority to me.
GPS guided me to the area, then this sign post pointed the way from the sidewalk into the off-street courtyard.
The sign’s up that Sunday, December 2, will be the last day of the season.
I liked the focus here, 16 flavors available at a time. I asked the friendly counter man to suggest three flavors for sampling. The signature Chocolate Flake Fromage was rich with cream cheesiness, a lilting touch of salt, and flakey chocolate. He warned me that French Apple Crumb was quite sweet, yet that popped out the intense baked apple flavor and I loved the buttery pastry crumbs. My pick was Old Drunk Monk, as I’m a sucker for liqueur-flavored ice creams such as the Frangelico base featured here with hazelnuts and chocolate chunks.
My last visit to KC I checked out Christopher Elbow’s Glacé. Now having sized up Murray’s, I’d say that I like the old-fashioned, dense ice cream here equally well.
