mucho gusto

djk | Jul 17, 2005 02:28 AM

there is a thread from mid june about gusto - about very soon after it opened. but i didn't want to add to it because it wasn't a merry thread and my post is a merry post. i thought it was pretty great. lovely evening seeing as you like it in the park, looking for a place that would serve around 11:30, something i hadn't been to as yet and i called gusto - they serve until midnight, said come on down and four of us were seated immediately, greeted warmly, fed generously and all in all - left quite happy and eager to return.

a ligurian wine from cima......(can't remember the rest) that was lovely and supported a meal that included the fava beans, pecorino and mint salad - beautifully mixed together, the carciofi alla giudia - fried baby artichokes with no oily overtaste, amazingly tender, delicate tho in need of a little salt, then perfect zucchini blossoms lightly stuffed with a melting mozzarella, a rocket salad (good rocket is hard to find) with a great parmesan grated over it and then an incredibly and perfectly cooked seafood salad, so tasty - the squid was a poem, a ravioli stuffed with bitter greens, ricotta, sage and walnuts in a browned butter sauce, fabulous spinach gnocchi, and a pasta with tomatos and mint. this followed by grappas, wine and gelato. what else can one say? it all could use a spot more salt but otherwise - flavored like an italian would - cooked so simply but with great regard and confidence. jody williams is the chef - she cooked at il buco, felidia, tappo and giorgione among was just a really, really nice meal in a very good space, nice lighting, nice ambience.....i'm very happy to welcome this chef back.welcome, welcome.
