Had a fantastic dinner at A Rebours in downtown Saint Paul last Thursday.
I showed up at 6pm with no reservation and was seated immediately. I was to see a show at the Fitzgerald at 7:30 and they were very gracious about my time crunch.
I ordered the Braised Short Rib with bacon risotto, shitake mushrooms, and oven roasted tomatos. I had a glass of petit syrah to go with my meal (sorry I don't recall the name of the wine). The short rib was fork tender. It practically melted on my tongue. The shitakes were a different sort of meaty that contrasted nicely and the oven roasted tomatos added a bright note without clashing. The bacon risotto was fantastic, smoky and perfectly cooked with slivers of bacon throughout. I'm not ashamed to admit that I sopped my plate clean with some bread from my bread basket.
I had enough time before leaving to eat dessert, so I treated myself to the Malt Chocolate Créme Brulee and some black tea. The creme brulee was luscious. The top was sprinkled with salted cashews so the overall effect with the chocolate, malt, and carmelized sugars reminded me of a Tin Roof sundae (my mother's favorite when I was a child.)
