Pouring rain for what feels like weeks. Exhausted from crazy schedule. Frustrated from learning a new job and being among thousands of nameless faces at work all day.
Give me some comfort food and someone to pour me a hot cup of coffee and call me by name. And then maybe an hour to escape the grind and dive into the newspaper.
I stopped into Emily's up on 44th Ave (at Penn Ave) in North Minneapolis and boy was that exactly what I needed. Breakfast all day, a handful of daily lunch specials and in the half hour I was there, only one other person besides me in the 25-30 people there wasn't greeted with a "Hi Jane", "how is everything Bob" and "say, how is little Vicki doing in school?". A photo of this place should be in the dictionary next to "Family Restaurant".
What a gem and a great place -- reminiscent of Bonnie's Cafe, Wally's Roast Beef, Our Kitchen and those kinds of places. Standard comfort foods like hot open-faced meatloaf or turkey sandwiches, bean and ham soup, omelets and very good pancakes and hash browns.
As I was paying and asking about the specials, Emily came over and my server introduced me to her with, "Emily...this is Dave. He'll be eating here now." Everything about that, and the restaurant itself was exactly what I needed on a day like today. And she was right.
