Moving to Miami

Maybe. Have my choice of assignments, for a variety of reasons. Miami being the one place I've never seen, I am intrigued.

Aside from Florida's many assets, how is the Chowhounding (relative to other cities)? I have the impression that Miami is all Latin, and nothing else. Is there any Asian community to speak of? I find no mention of any Chinatown on the web.

Polish/Slavic/etc? Italian? And so on. I am interested in Latin foods, but not to the exclusion of everything else. And I have absolutely NO interest in anything tourist-related. I intend to live somewhere downtown, and spend most of my time in the inner city.

I'm not expecting NYC or San Francisco, but would Miami at least be better than Philly or San Diego, (my other options), for example? Any recommendations for areas to live? Dumpy port/riverfront area walking distance to the "fun" (Chinatown, shopping, central park) is my speed.

Oh, last thing - can I survive in Miami without a car? Although I will have one, I live for city walks. L.A. drove me nuts.
