Mount Unpleasant

Hawksmoor | Oct 2, 2010 06:42 AM

Went to Bolands Open Kitchen on Mt Pleasant for a birthday dinner. We had been once before and enjoyed the carefully prepared, reasonably sized but elegant local cusien and interesting wine list. Last night we arrived to be put in a tiny, tin cielinged room whereupwards of twenty shouting made the din deafening and distracting for the waiters, "Stay all night if you like" said the owner, Mr Boland, at our table, but little did we realize we'd have to just to get the food we ordered. Wedged between a small table and elderly woman drinking lager seated, of all things, on a rec-room bar stool, we were forgotten. I couldn't find anyone to replace my bottomless chair, so i did it myself. Because the waiters could not even get to our table without difficulty, they ignored it as much as possible. A student waitress took twenty minutes to arrive then never looked us in the eye and apparently got our order wrong. A different waiter arrived with wine then asked if we had ordered. Finally, moved to a room with a chair, we waited for two hours, then yet another waiter came with cheese and toast in lieu of our mains and sides. When the food finally arrived, it didn't include all of the sides, I asked for them but they didn't arrive for another 20 minutes, after we had finished the cornish hen and veal shoulder they were meant to accompany. They offered to comp us the sides, but people paying 200$ plus for dinner aren't really trying to save 10$. We left before dessert. Sad to say, a possible fine local restaurant has now achieved the goal of many north toronto resataurants of having worse service than Gabby' sports bar. I left a toonie for a tip.
