Help with Moro Rice

There's a local restaurant here in Gainesville, FL (Mi Apa Latin Cafe) that serves Moro Rice (black beans and rice). It's very dark like the one pictured in this recipe:

I've tried several recipes (I did use canned beans instead of dried beans) and mine come out more like this every time:

They taste good but don't have quite the same flavor.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do different?
