Had dinner last night at Morimoto in Napa. Started at the bar with a delicious Shiso Mojito and then on to dinner which I had planned to restrict to appetizers and sushi.
Starters included the Rock Shrimp Tempura, Tuna Pizza, Foie Gras Chawan Mushi, and the Kakuni.
I would order the Rock Shrimp and the Tuna Pizza again, but would likely skip the Mushi and the Kakuni. Everything was delicious, but I preferred the savory over the mildly sweet custard and the very soft pork belly.
The tempura was very crisp and I loved the flavor of the wasabi aioli. The entire appetizer was enjoyed thoroughly. The tuna pizza melts in your mouth and has a lot of favor with nice contrast between the raw fish and the crisp tortilla.
As a wasabi addict, I could have use more wasabi or more heat on the dishes, but all were very flavorful - the Chawan Mushi comes with a tiny pearl of wasabi....
I also had a spicy tuna roll, the maki are nothing out of the ordinary, but are well done and priced similar to my neighborhood sushi spots.
My SO wanted to try the Uni Carbonara - I did not love this one. But I am not a huge fan of Uni or Carbonara. And If I do eat Carbonara I like it dry rather than soupy.
The cod was recommended but was my least favorite dish. Slightly over-cooked and sticky with a sweet teriyaki style sauce. The waiter asked if I had ever had better cod and I had to admit I have had better (at East Ocean in Alameda of all places- the smoked black cod is delicious).
We also had a side of the duck fried rice. The SO loved it, I found it tasty but a tad salty. Maybe just the wrong combination of dishes, but the overall experience was quite pleasant and all the other guests seemed happy and enjoying the restaurant.
I would love to try a few more of the dishes on another visit.
