Moosetta's Russian Piroshki, Sonoma Valley

Melanie Wong | Oct 22, 200102:44 AM

I must have driven by the sandwich board sign on the Sonoma Highway hundreds of times without stopping to investigate the freshly made piroshki offered. Finally, I did and can't wait to go back.

Both the fried and baked variety are made here and sold to you still warm from the initial cooking. This makes a huge difference over the refrigerated and then microwaved versions offered by many sandwich shops.

I opted for the original (fried) with beef filling at $2.95. This was a wonder of texture with a lightly crisp exterior crust, chewy elastic fried dough, and crumbly ground beef stuffing. The beef was seasoned with ample amounts of dill, onion and some chopped egg and was greaseless. Savory, homey and very satisfying as a warm breakfast for the drive.

Many different flavor combos are offered including vegetarian versions and a pepperoni and jack cheese one.
