I just returned from the Mrytle Beach area, where my parents have their retirement house. Since I will be traveling the I-95 corridor from DC to Wilmington and then down to the Mrytle Beach area, I've been looking for local eats that doesn't include Hardee's and Cracker Barrel.
This trip I found a worthy spot in Kenly, NC called Moore's Barbecue. a small hole in the wall kind of place, the menu consists of pulled pork, fried chicken and sides. The BBQ plate came as a pile of pull pork with 2 sides, the potato salad was pretty good, but didn't like the cole slaw. It seems BBQ joints in the south like to make cole slaw that is finely minced cabbage with a really sweet mayo, not to my liking. I also tried the fried chicken which was also excellent. eveything comes with hushpuppies, which were ok, a little dense and sweet tea. Most everything is around $5, an excellent bargain.
HWY 301, Kenly NC
Open Tues-Sat 10:30am-8pm.
It's about a 4 hour drive from DC. If you are coming down I-95 south, take the Kenly offramp, take a left into Kenly and it's about 1/2 mile down the road.
