With International travel much more difficult, we’ve decided to re-investigate travel within Canada.
After a couple of trips to Quebec, here are a few hints for relatively upscale dining. We hit several others but with COVID restrictions, not all places are ‘back to normal’ so detailed descriptions have been avoided because things change frequently.
But we can recommend ‘the best we found’ in hopes this will assist in finding excellent dining.
Two trips to Montreal;
The earliest (2020) saw the highlight being Le Mousso, which had switched to a tasting menu only (with commentaries on the wines and food). With a subsequent shutdown, they have apparently refurbished and will reopen ‘soon’ (predicted September 2021 but not yet reopened) with a ‘new format’ (which I suspect is the one we actually experienced in 2020).
Returning this month, the highlight was Restaurant Pastel – also a tasting menu (we chose the longer option) with matching wines. Food was excellent, and wines were ‘interesting’ although the pattern of service was strange (2 glasses with the main course; and only 2 other glasses for the rest of the tasting).
Emphasizing that the above were the ‘best’ we encountered.
Two visits to Quebec City
Here an undoubted highlight – Taniere³ - absolutely sensational on both visits. After the first visit it placed in my top 5 in Canada. After the second it’s a candidate for #1 (and firmly in the top 3).
What puzzles me most is that it doesn’t seem to be on any ‘foodie’ radar – NONE of my trusted contacts mentioned this while I was planning my visit. Since visit #1 I’ve recommended Taniere to others – but only 1 has visited (and reported back that it was also their highlight and agreed with my assessment).
As a bizarre aside note that I said “trusted contacts” – it’s actually rated #1 in Quebec City on Tripadvisor! So, “the truth is out there” just not in the usual places!
