monte's hero's

bean | Jan 31, 2002 12:19 PM

i had a sudden craving for a real italian hero (you know, 3 meats, cheese and the works) and i was driving up near kings highway and remembered monte's heros. anyone been there? a tiny italian take-out joint that quite literally builds heros (they also do take-out catering). they have lots of great hot heros and also the monte's deluxe -- 3 meats (i think it was mortadella, genoa, and i'm not sure of the other but it was more 'bitey' than prosciutto or cappy) and fontinella cheese on a PERFECTLY fresh semalina hero roll (variations on sizes -- all are exquisitely fresh) and then topped with (for me) a few hot peppers (i'm still shivering!), roasted sweet peppers (kept almost whole in a big container, they are sitting in olive oil with their just roasted black clinging to them and when they are needed the guys take a whole one and simply pry it apart enough to lengthen out on your hero), herbs, o&v (basalmic) and loads of lettuce and tomatoes. everything is incredibly fresh. and a small one is hard to finish! they also have a few salads around and fresh mozzerella. the italian mommas are in the back doing the cooking and the guys upfront (who are very polite) make the heros. there's nowhere to sit and eat around there so you have to take it with you.

monte's heros. 156 avenue o., brooklyn, ny 11204
