Spent a night in Pacific Grove on the Sunday of Presidents' Day holiday weekend (to make up for a poor husband Valentines Day performance due to illness). On the way in had lunch at Phil's which has recently receieved some poor press here. I had very good swordfish with a grilled artichoke on the side and my wife had very good fish and chips. Yes, it is expensive for what it is, crowded, self-service, etc but the fish was of high quality and well prepared.

Dinner was at Passionfish. It was excellent. I had calamari appetizer, great duck (even my wife loved it which she rarely does) and wonderful wine, a half bottle of a French rose champagne and 2003 Siduri Cargasacchi pinot. The chef, Ted Walter, was helping serve as the waitstaff was shorthanded. Despite that, the service was fine and Mr. Walter is a fine gentleman. Dessert was fine. My only quibble was one of the sides with my duck. There were two, fennel which did surprisingly well with the duck and a potato dish which didn't go as well.

Next day, we had lunch at Rio Grill which is one of my wife's long standing favorites. I find them to be highly reliable with efficient service. They are not cutting edge but consistent at a high level of quality.
