Monterey Report

On the way down, driving from San Rafael, we stopped at San Gregorio beach and had lovely beach time and a burrito from the supermercado/gas station/mexican food joint in Pescadero. Somewhere between there and Santa Cruz (closer to SC) we happened upon a place right on H'way 1 that sold organic strawberries and other baked goods and desserts. A fellow customer highly recommended the fresh stawberry shortcakes and we partook- Oh my.... One of the best desserts I've had in years. When we got to Monterey, we stopped over at Fresh Cream where we had a five year old and expired gift certificate. They were very gracious and honored the entire amount. We had a very good dinner there, but it felt overpriced, especially as the entrees ($30-40) did not come with any sides. We were also seated next to the drunken fourtop from hell (tables way too close together) which did not help matters. Saturday night, we went to Passionfish, which I had found on this board. We were incredibly delighted. We ordered four apps (french fried asparagus, crab and fennel salad, oysters and ahi with a jicima-wasabi slaw), an ahi entree and two desserts (more strawberries, and an utterly unique and amazing gorgonzola cheese cake). We had an excellent bottle of Pinot (Merry Edwards, a fave) and got out for about $120. This was about $100 less than Fresh Cream and we both thought is was much superior.

On Sunday we attempted to find a fish and chips pub recommended by a fellow poster, on old fishermans wharf but ended up at a mediocre tourist place. Oh well, the weather was magnificent and we had a brilliant trip.
