About this time of year, when I am thankful for God’s blessings on my life, I am also missing many beloved family members! And, with their passing, I am missing their many idiosyncrasies which will never again be witnessed or experienced. One such “method” was my mom’s cornbread which was the foundation of her Thanksgiving stuffing. Having several of her cookbooks, and her handwritten notes, I still cannot duplicate that recipe. It’s lost to the ages! Happy Thanksgiving Mom! RIP!
I miss the jello salads the aunts used to bring. One cousin by marriage was still doing a great strawberry and banana one but she moved away. But I'm pretty sure what I'm cooking is building memories for our next generations. Our grandkids already have a preference for "real rolls" meaning homemade yeast rolls. When a friend's mom died, her young grandson worried about who was going to make the rolls. Fortunately, my friend has her mom's recipe for Parker House rolls.
I miss my grandmother’s everything! Her cinnamon rolls that were bigger than your head and I’m convinced had one stick of butter a piece (she made them for every occasion), her homemade boiled icing, her “icebox” cookies, her roasted beets, her stuffing, her rolls. We have recipes and notes but no one makes them like Grandma did!
