Momofuku Ko 2.0

ellenost | Nov 28, 2014 08:18 PM

I had dinner tonight at the first official dinner at Momofuku Ko now located at its new home at Extra Place (off of East 1st Street between Second and Third Aves.). I was also invited to Friends & Family last week, but did not post since I did not pay for my dinner. Since I paid the full price for my dinner tonight (zero comps), I think it is fair to post my report. As most of you know, I'm a regular at Ko so although I was sad to leave the First Ave. location, I am thrilled with the new location. The space is huge, and beautifully designed. The new space reminds me of Atera (another favorite restaurant). The counter is U-shaped, with the chefs cooking and plating in the center. The chefs still present and describe each dish. Oh yes, non-flash photos are permitted. Printed menus are provided at the end of dinner. Dinner now takes close to 3 hours with about 17 courses (similar to lunch at Ko). As you may have read, Ko is now open only for dinner 5 nights a week (Wednesday - Sunday). Seats are now soft with low back support.

Dinner at Ko is a more elegant meal. There is no dress code, but everything feels more polished. There is an extensive wine list, in addition to a wine pairing option. Yes, prices have increased, but the dinner is now the same price as the lunch with the same number of courses. Most importantly the food remains creative and delicious. The famous shaved Foie gras, and soft cooked egg remain on the menu. There is now a formal bar where snacks are served in addition to drinks.

The new reservation system works fine (made my reservation via my iPhone on the subway Wednesday afternoon after Momofuku tweeted that the reservation system was working).

Bottom line: many of you will be skeptical of my report since I am a regular. Don't take my word, see for yourself. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
