A year ago I caught up with Chef Sakun Rai at his stand, Momo Cook, at the Wednesday Oakland farmers market. I'd chatted with him a few years ago after enjoying an exemplary Nepalese meal at a Santa Rosa restaurant, before he disappeared from the area.
The hot ticket item on his market menu, in more ways than one, was the Chili Momos. The handmade dumplings filled with seasoned ground chicken were stir-fried in a lusty chile sauce until burnished, a little caramelized and soaked in layers of bold, spicy flavors.
At the other end of the spectrum leading with intricate, filigreed flavors, the steamed Mushroom Momos laced with fresh green herbs. Thin-skinned and delicately pleated, these savory vegetable-based dumplings impressed in a whole different way.
I would have liked to try the Nepali-style chow mein too, but it had sold out along with everything else at this popular stand before the end of shift.
