Modesto: new Papachino's

When Jack Odichio first opened Papachino's on 10th Street in downtown Modesto, I was one happy boy. Lebanese-Mediterranean food was almost an unknown in Modesto, and here was this wonderful place with the most delectable food and one of the cheapest places in town to eat! Elise & I had many a wonderful meal there.

As often happens, one thing led to another, and Jack decided to open a larger place, and moved out of the downtown, and then abandoned the cuisine he knew so well, aiming at a more "American" palate. Feh.

Fast forward a few years. Jack's new Papachino's, on J Street between 12th and 13th is his latest incarnation, and it is a return to his Mediterannean roots. The decor is sunny and pleasant. Two sidewalk tables beckon, and inside the walls are muraled and very attractive. The food is once again Middle Eastern and well prepared. It's unfortunately no longer the cheapest lunch in town, but you can get away nicely for 7 or 8 dollars, tax & tip included.
