Mochica report

Six of us enjoyed dinner at Mochica over the weekend. If we'd stopped with appetizers, I think we would have thought this was the find of the decade. All the appetizers were excellent, including the ceviche mixto, the braised octopus (not at all rubbery), the beef heart antichuchos (addictive sauce) and the prawns appetizer (forgot the name). The fried garbanzos served with were absolutely addictive.

Oddly, entrees were all over the map. My calamares rellenos (chorizo-stuffed calamari) was outstanding. My mom's seco de cordero featured a generous portion of good but not great chops (not braised, as with previous reports) with a nice sauce. Two of us ordered the Peruvian fish stew (forgot the name) and found it very bland. This was also true of the halibut in banana leaves. And my sister's rib eye looked fantastic but was overcooked and served with a bland chimichuri.

Desserts, as reported, were mediocre, with slightly stale alfajores and an undercooked banana flambe (no sign of flambe). We found reasonable selections from the wine list, but now I wish I'd recalled we could have brought our own.

Service was rough. We were often left with dirty plates right up until the next course arrived, and when we asked the server to take away remaining dinner plates once dessert arrived, he nodded, disappeared and the busboy finally removed them several minutes later.

It wasn't a bad experience, but it didn't measure up to recent reports. Perhaps we got a bad night?
