OK, I could have made a big mistake thinking that Joey's Sausage, Ice Cream & Laundry on O'Farrell would really be a good venue to host my first Mitchell's ice cream experience, but I did not dig this cream at all.
I live out the outter edge of the T-loin and my date and I were craving ice cream at 9:00 pm on Tuesday. So, still being a newcomer in town, I broke out the Chowhound Guide to SF and saw the Joey's posting. We took a walk on the seedy side, and tried a couple scoops (toasted almond for me and cookie n' cream for him).
Now, I don't know if Joey just doesn't move a lot of cream but this stuff tasted gummy, corn syrupy and old. Did I detect carageenan? The flavor offerings were definitely exciting but this did not taste like "home made" ice cream.
So, was it Joey's, or is Mitchell's really not all that good anywhere? I could be opening a can of worms with that question, but what I really want to know is where we can get real home made, all natural ice cream with creative flavors near downtown, tenderloin, russian hill, civic ctr? If there are any former Boston/Cambridge hounds out there, is there anything like Christina's in SF? I know there must be!
