Mitama in Rockridge -- slightly disappointing

Went to Mitama in Rockridge tonight -- it wasn't bad, but after the glowing writeups in a previous chowhound thread, I had to say we were a bit disappointed. The meal started well -- the fried, battered nori strips were original and kept their nori taste well, and the cucumber eel salad was crisp and clear-flavored. But the sushi was nothing special -- the flavors in the more complicated maki (spider roll with tempura soft-shell crab, eel and avocado roll) got muddled together, and the sushi was just all right --- the tuna was more mealy than buttery and the octopus more rubbery than chewy. Again, this was not a _bad_ sushi place and had we not gone in expecting something really special it would not have been disappointing -- but based on this visit, I wouldn't make Mitama a destination.
