Mistral does a face plant

I just returned from dinner at Mistral and must confess this was one of the worst meals I have ever eaten, or should I say almost ate because most of it was left on the plates. Although the restaurant is beautiful the food was deplorable. I started with the foie gras. This was served Tower of Terror style, atop a bread cylinder sat a nice sized piece of foie gras. The first bite was overcooked and overly salty. Between the bread and the foie was shredded beef (what’s that about). This was a complete disappointment. My entrée was the half “whole” duck with Mushroom Risotto. The dish was enormous, resembling the Blue Plate Special at a diner versus a fine restaurant. Once again the chef thought the Flavor de Jour was salt. Not only was it too salty but was overly fatty (even for a duck). When the waiter came over and asked how the food was I asked if the Chef was off and he admitted that he was not present. He did offer to replace but I had no confidence the chef on duty was capable of preparing another dish. My colleague ordered the Dover Sole and this was also enormous with three filets. I do not know how a fish can be three-sided but somehow Mistral’s kitchen can perform this task. I thought I ordered something safe for dessert with the warm chocolate cake with Crème Anglaise. Both were close to tasteless, the cake undercooked and the Crème lacking any vanilla flavor. This restaurant should NOT be used in the same sentence as other great restaurants in Boston.
