Right next door to Lai Young dumpling factory https://www.chowhound.com/post/frozen... is a tamale factory, Mis Tamales. Naturally, I had to investigate, and the sign in the window for nacatamales caught my eye. A specialty of Nicaragua, these are not that common in the Bay Area.

I bought one nacatamal, $7, and for back up, one tamal Salvadoreño, $4, both types wrapped with banana leaves and then a layer of paper over that. I asked for them cold straight from the refrigerator to put in my ice chest rather than having them heated for immediate consumption.

Turns out I much preferred the Salvadoran-style tamal, so I'm glad I purchased both. The fine-textured, strained masa in both had similar if not identical savory seasoning. the Saladoreño was about half the size with some tomato, green beans, onion and a little chicken in the filling. The nacatamal had a big mass of rice in the center, whereas I would have preferred more masa. Fragrant from the minty leaves and tomato, the filling included dried out chicken, hard and desicated pork that was inedible, fatty pork, potatoes and tomato. There were no capers, olives or eggs that I'm had in other versions, making it far less interesting.

Mis Tamales sells Mexican tamales as well, and I'd try those next time. This is not a place to eat-in though it does have a table and two chairs outside the door. Delivery is available via Ubereats.
