Best last-minute restaurant + a see-and-be-seen bar for a visitor from NYC

Please help! I'm a chowhound from NYC that is looking for a great place to grab dinner with a good friend that I haven't seen in five years. Anything that's quiet enough to have good conversation, but delicious enough that we might not talk for 30 minutes straight, and laidback enough that we can still get a same day reservation. I'm thinking Thai, Italian and New American, but if Chicago is known for a particular cuisine that I don't know about, please feel free to recommend it.

Also, is there a great new scenester bar to go grab a drink at, so I can see what fabulous looks like in Illinois?

Any and all help is most appreciated.
