Minami: budget sashimi

Pei | Apr 15, 2009 05:05 PM

Hubby and I stopped in at Minami on Clement and 20th yesterday to satisfy some intense sushi cravings. This tiny neighborhood joint may fly low on the radar, but it completely charmed us.

First, the bad: the spider roll ($9 or $10) was completely uninspired. I'll stay away from the non-traditional sushi next time.

Natto: nutty, roasty, not too stinky, and appropriately slimy. Loved it! ($3.50)

Chirashi Deluxe ($15.50) Absolutely gorgeous. 9 pieces of assorted sashimi, of which the salmon and yellowtail were the best imo. The chirashi stood out for me because of the myriad of cooked items in addition to the raw fish, like braised daikon, shitake, carrots, pickled vegetables, unagi, and a very nicely done tamago. Call me a cheap date, but I can't always eat nothing but raw fish and rice. Some hot/cooked items really balance out a meal for me.

Sashimi sampler ($13 or 14): 11 pieces of fish. Good portions, hot rice, nice variety, nothing to complain about.

Both our dishes came with miso and a few complimentary pieces of teriyaki sweet potato. We left stuffed to the gills and very content! Additionally, the service was as sweet as pie, the owners and servers seemed to know several customers, and tea was refilled continuously through our meal. We'll definitely be back to this homey little Richmond spot.
