Coworkers and I decided to have lunch at Penang Garden, a Malaysian/ Singapore restaurant in Milpitas Square. For starters, we had the poh piah (steamed jicama rolls), fried tofu w/ peanut sauce and roti prata. For entrees, we ordered the tom yum noodle soup (sour lemongrass soup w/ seafood) and the stir-fried seafood on top of some fried taro.
The appetizers were good- Im a fan of the poh piah and the soft jicama blended well w/ the hoisin sauce. The fried tofu was also tasty. I enjoyed the crunchy peanut sauce loaded w/ nuts. Perhaps a bit too sweet, but I still liked it. The noodle soup was a big disappointment. The red broth, while tasty, wasnt authentic and extremely oily. Nothing compared to that served at Krung Thai. Also, there was way too much noodles compared to the soup. I dont think Id order this dish again. The fried taro entrée was good. By the time I ate it, the taro was no longer crispy but I imagine it wouldve been great had I tried it when it first came out.
