My husband and I recently spent several days in the Finger Lakes area. We visited many wineries and enjoyed the lovely scenery, even though it was grey and damp most of the time we were there. We stayed in the Watkins Glen area and had read a post on this board which seemed to indicate that good food in that area was pretty limited. I just wanted to share a couple of reviews from our trip.
Unfortunately, we were not there on a Fri-Sat stay so we missed many of the places we wanted to try since they are only open on weekends in the off-season. We had pleasant lunches at several of the area wineries, but none really stood out as outstanding.
Jerlando's Ristorante in Watkin's Glen was a pleasant surprise. It was recommended to us by the owner of the B&B we stayed at. It is Italian food. The menu is quite extensive and each entree includes garlic cheese bread and a salad. They had a nice selection of Finger Lakes wines, along with others. The atmosphere was casual, the food was great, and the prices were very inexpensive! The place was packed on a Sunday night and I can see why.
We also had a very enjoyable dinner at Just A Taste in Ithaca. It is a Tapas place and was also very busy for a mid-week dinner. The place is very small and did not have a bar area to wait for a table. We put our name in and went next door to a charming bar and enjoyed a glass of Finger Lakes wine while we waited. Once seated we started searching the menu choices for our selections. The waitress was helpful in making recommendations. Against her recommendation my husband ordered the chicken wings which were very spicy (as the server warned). I was unable to eat them, but he suffered his way through them. All the other items we ordered we very good, including a hot crab dip, sautéed mushrooms, and a warm brie plate. We also enjoyed the wine flights offered on the menu which give you a chance to try several different wines with your food.
We are looking forward to planning a return trip in the future!
