Microwaved "fried" onions photo report

Jacinthe posted a handy tip to microwave thinly sliced shallots instead of deep-frying them. Here's the post:

I tried it on Friday with onions, hoping the same tip would work, but it didn't come out the way I'd hoped. Here's what I did and photos:

Sliced a yellow onion to 1/8 inch rings, then cut the larger rings into fourths. Sprayed with canola oil. Photo here:

Microwaved at full power for 4 minutes. Resulting photo:

Worried my microwave was too strong, I continued for 2 minutes at 50% power. Resulting photo was hardly any different:

Back in the microwave at full power for 1 minute and I got this:

Oh no, not coming out right. Didn't know what to do, so I simply gave it another minute at full power then decided that was enough:

The last photo shows the ending size if you start with half a medium-large onion:

The end result's texture wasn't soft, but it wasn't crispy either. It was a tiny bit bitter from the scorched bits, but not bad tasting. I still used them for my green bean dish and it gave the dish that fried onions taste. But I was really hoping for golden brown crispy onions. Any tips? Or does this only work with shallots?
