MORE MICHELIN STARS FOR LONDON FOOD SCENE
London’s reputation as one of the top gourmet cities of the world has been reinforced once again today with the launch of the new ‘Michelin Guide London 2008’. 45 of the city’s restaurants have been awarded prestigious Stars, an increase of 2 on last year’s tally.
In 2005 London boasted 36 Michelin Star restaurants with this figure rising to 40 in 2006 and 43 in 2007. This year five new London eateries have been added to the famous list, with only 3 dropping off.
Demonstrating that top quality restaurants can be found throughout the city, French restaurant, La Trompette, in Chiswick received One Star in this year’s guide. Also adding to London’s Star-count are Mayfair’s Wild Honey, the sister restaurant to fellow Michelin Star eatery Arbutus, and Hibiscus, which has been newly located to London from Shropshire. Gary Rhodes’ restaurant within the Cumberland Hotel, Rhodes W1, received a coveted Star, as did Indian restaurant Quilon, sister restaurant to The Bombay Brasserie.
Also featured in the ‘Michelin Guide London 2008’ are 27 Bib Gourmand establishments offering ‘good food at moderate prices’ – three courses for less than £28. Gordon Ramsey’s ‘gastro-pub’, The Narrow, in London’s Docklands is a newcomer to the list, along with 8 other additions in this category.
Michelin have been producing guides for Britain since 1911 with a stand-alone London edition launched in 1974. Stars are awarded to establishments serving cuisine of the highest quality as a result of independent, regular and anonymous visits from inspectors.
London’s gastronomy scene has something for everyone with over 6,000 restaurants to choose from as well as 5,000 pubs and bars and 83 markets, many of which sell great food.
