Boy was this a mistake.
A bad joke.
I'd never been to Michael's and now I know why.
First of all, service is incredibly slow -- the place caters to a ladies-who-lunch crowd that obviously can spend two hours at lunch. Busy business folk usually cannot. The former dress code has been relaxed, however, as a tourist in baggy shorts attested.
Out first came a white corn soup with creme fraiche -- a chilled soup, light and refreshing but flavorful and not empty-feeling. Nice.
Then we saw the two Asian girls at the table next to ours get the salmon we had both ordered. It was so small they immediately broke up laughing and looked at each other like, "Okay, we are going for a hot dog on the way back, right?" They started laughing again when they saw we had ordered it. Mine was too rare to eat -- asked them to cook it some more. They brought it back, new tiny piece of fish, very hot plate -- fish still sushi-rare. Next!
The saving grace was the chocolate valrhona fudge cake w/ice cream and the apple tart with so much butter in the crust you could smell it. These were truly fantastic.
Amazing that for a promotion designed to get people to try new restaurants they would serve an entree portion so tiny -- not to mention I found it inedible -- that it was literally a source of comedy for the guests. Just mind-boggling ineptitude. Also forgot to charge my friend for his drink...
