(I couldn't add the new Michael Mina location for this post (located at 252 California Street, where Aqua was located.))
I invited 2 co-workers to lunch. We were the FIRST lunch customers of this new restaurant.
We all ordered the chef's tasting menu ($39), and we were served family style. Eight courses in total, six savory and two sweet.
Seating at the bar for lunch gives the diner a tempting view of the alcoholic beverages available. We, however, ordered zero proof beverages - I got the Mango Limeade and they ordered the Japanese Tonic. The mango limeade was tart with mango pieces in it. The Japanese tonic was so refreshing. We decided that it would be better with gin.
The pace of the tasting menu was fantastic (we were a little worried about getting back to work - 8 courses is a lot of food). The staff stayed on top the dishes, bringing out the next course just as (or just before, in some cases) we finished a course. Two of the courses, lobster corndogs and tuna tartare, are staples of the Michael Mina restaurants (I was told - this was my first experience with his restaurants.) I can still barely smell the scotch bonnet-infused sesame oil.
Probably shouldn't tell you this, but at the end of the 6 savory courses, Ryan Cole, the general manager, asked if we had been served enough food; it was their first time, and Chef Mina did not have the proportions down exactly for the family-style meal for three. Turns out, we weren't satisfied yet, so we got a 7th course. Totally put us in heaven (Japanese "style" hamburger, cut in thirds). People, just order that! I am so happy I got to try it.
I can hardly wait to go back to the bar and hang with the beautiful people. Then dinner with the man that I love sometime in December. Enjoy!
