Since several of you were kind enough to give suggestions for my long layover, here is my update: First of all, as it turned out I had three hours on the way to Central America, so used that to go to Carretta's (sp?). I had the vaca frita (beef panfried with onions until crisp) served with black beans on the side. A tip: at the airport location the food is ordered at the counter, and when I got there the line was daunting (especially since you have to go back through security if you go there). So I sat at the bar, where you can order from a waitress, get the food quickly, and have a delicious mojito while you're at it. The civilized way to do it. For our long layover on Sunday, one of my friends insisted on South Beach, so we braved the heat and went. We ended up at Lario's, which appealed to her because supposedly its owned by Gloria Estefan (I don't follow stuff like this). We all enjoyed our meals, but I think I liked Carretta's better. The ceviche at Lario's WAS excellent, as was the special soup of the day (a white bean soup). Good mojitos as well, and a delicious mango sorbet for dessert. Afterwards we headed down to the water, where the breezes made life comfortable for an hour. No problems with getting a taxi to and fro,and no traffic problems.
