Mi Tierra Restaurant, Hadley, MA - Report

Dave M.P. | Jan 13, 2006 10:12 PM

Yesterday I ate at Mi Tierra, a relatively new restaurant in Hadley (on Rt. 9 almost exactly halfway between Northampton and Amherst). It used to just be a small store for Latin American groceries but it recently opened as a restaurant. They got good reviews in the paper and from a friend of mine, so I went with a friend yesterday to check it out.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of business at 1:45 PM on a Thursday. Good sign. The menu looked nice, several interesting options, but my friend and I both got tacos. I got three steak tacos and she got three chicken tacos....both were served on fresh tortillas (awesome) with cilantro and onion and a wedge of lime. We also got chips with salsa verde which I ended up putting on the taco. The steak was good, crispy on outside, not tough at all....wasn't super flavorful though. Chicken was surprisingly a bit more flavorful. Definitely not the best tacos that I've ever had, but certainly good for Western Mass! Taco wise at least, this place is in the ballpark of Tacos Lupita in Somerville and veering off in a different (and probably better) direction from Bueno y Sano, La Veracruzana, etc....this place seems like the real deal.....I want to go back to Mi Tierra soon to try the pork tacos (these were not available at the time I ordered cause the pork was cooking and wasn't going to be ready for a while).

A woman across from us had a steak burrito which looked great, and I overheard her saying that it was.

After lunch I looked around the store briefly...they have expanded I think (they moved from the front of the strip to the back, alongside the restaurant). Lots of nice Mexican products, spices and other Latin American products (for example, I saw dulce de membrillo and dulce de zapallo from Argentina).

This place is definitely worth a try, and I'll hopefully get back there to try other menu items...
