Mezza luna knife

My wife says she would like a mezza luna knife, but neither of us have ever used one. Is it a worthy kitchen tool? And if so, how important is it to buy a bowl vs. just using it on a regular cutting board? Finally, can anyone recommend a quality knife that is less expensive than the top-line cutlery brands (e.g. Henckel's, Wusthof, Sabatier, etc.)?
