I have had the most delicious tuna salad and sandwhiches in resorts around Mexico, from Cancun to Cabo. The tuna is unlike any I have ever had here. It looks about as dark as ahi, flavorful and fatty. When I was at the Fiesta Americana I could not get over the tuna sandwhich. I asked the waiter where the tuna was from, expecting him to tell me, they got it fresh off the boat. Instead, he told me it is just the regular Mexican tuna out of the can, it is not even fresh. I have tried to re-create the experience. I even bought a nice ahi steak, and it did not even come out as good.
I was also invited to a friend's house for dinner one night. For the first course she made individual tuna pate's formed in the shape of a ramekin, with diced up red onions, avocado and tomatoes. and served with baguette. I also could not get over the tuna. She is from Mexico and told me that everytime her Mom comes over, she brings cans of tuna in her suitcase for her. She also can't find the same quality of canned tuna here.
Does anybody know where in LA I can find Mexican tuna? Would they have it at Vallarta style markets?
