Mexican-Ryukyu cuisine: Borrachos! in Sangenjaya

With a name like Sangenjaya, one could expect Indian food (from the sound of the name) but last night a friend took me there for a meal at Borrachos!, which could be the only Mexican-Ryukyu restaurant in Tokyo. The Ryukyu islands are essentially Okinawa, and there is a bit of crossover cuisine (umi-budo seaweed in salsa), but we stuck mainly to the Mexican food, which seemed to predominate on the menu, along with Okinawan creations like "Taco Rice" (American style taco ingredients spread out over a plate of white rice instead of a corn tortilla) and even pasta with crossover touches. We split a beef burrito (big chunks of stringy steer beef cooked way tender) and a tostada made into a salad, and had Mexican craft beer called Day of the Dead in IPA and Hefeweizen versions. The real hit of the meal, though, were these huge hunks of uncut spareribs made with Okinawan pork, which had been marinated in lots of citrus and spices. Incredible ribs they were, which essentially ended the meal because of their immense quantity. The ribs are a special order, and are best ordered in advance -- we didn't and got whatever was left in their kitchen, but they were exceptionally good. Anyhow, there are a lot of great things served at Borrachos! to warrant another visit soon.
