Alas, even though we have multitude of bars and restaurants in the Lower Haight, our Mexican/Taqueria pickings have been slim. We had that hippy place on Haight near Webster that closed a couple of years ago. And we had that super-nasty burrito joint near Lo-Cost Meat that closed earlier this year.
So us sad, put-upon Lower Haightians (LoHans?) had to trudge to Church and Market for a decent burrito/taco.
But No More! Open as of today is.....Las Mesas!
Its in the 600 block of Haight, on the left as you go up Haight.
Last night, we attended their opening night party. The menu is basic taqueria & they have a salsa bar. Oddly, nothing they served at the party is on the restaurant's menu board. And it was all really good. Turns out the chef is from Mexico City and the night's treats were Mexico City street/casual snacks.
We had chicken mole tortas and another torta that was dredged in red sauce, filled with veggies & sauce and fried in a skillet (yummmmmmm). His molletes were wonderful. There were plenty of other appetizers.
When we told the chef that we'd really like to be able to come in and order the Mexico City specialities, he did let us know that stuff will show up on a daily specials menu. He just didn't know if that's what people will want. If something is popular, he'll keep it.
We're going back tonight to check out the stuff on main menu. I'm really hoping that since the chef is a new arrival, his food will be less Californiaized. I'll let you know how it goes.
