Mexican restaurant with booths, cozy, darkish atmosphere

Ingrid Taylar | Apr 3, 200504:18 AM     20

My husband and I just moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles and the one thing (maybe the only thing) we miss from our old home is a Mexican restaurant like El Coyote or El Compadre in the Hollywood area. Both are dim and atmospheric, large spaces with comfortable and private booths to linger in and chat over margaritas. Are there any such venues up here -- with good food to boot? We're in the Rockridge area of Oakland but go often into the city and would definitely travel a bit for a taste of such ambiance. Most of the places we've checked out have more of a taqueria feel, including our favorites around here. Many thanks for any suggestions on this topic!
