Last Saturday I drove through the Mission in search of a quick bite wherever I might find parking. The bright lights of Tortas Los Picudos beckoned to me on this rainy night. In the window you can see the fresh fruits on display at the station where the aquas frescas and licuados are concocted. Inside, the ingredients for making tortas are arrayed in tubs along counter top assembly line.
A torta was going to be too much food for me, so I was happy to see a hand-printed sign offering Mexican-style hot dogs with bacon for $2.75 and ordered one along with a licuado de nuez. I watched the drinks man blending my order using walnuts, whole milk, cream, and sugar. He poured this into a tall styro cup for me, then motioned for me to drink some so that he could empty in the rest of the blender. He asked me if I needed more sugar, but no, it was just right. The hot dog was just okay, as the bacon was served as a strip alongside rather than wrapped around and grilled with the dog.
