I live close to NYC (in Nassau County) and I've been aspiring to become a foodie over the last few years. My favorite cuisine so far is Mexican, so I figured I would start out with this.

There are is a ton of authentic Mexican food in all 5 boroughs, and the vast majority of places I've been to have been good to excellent. But a lot of the menus are pretty retentive, seeming to specialize in antojitos and certain dishes from Mexico City and Puebla.

I would like to hear about some places that specialize in regional dishes, which have more than the usual antojitos +mole poblano. I've heard of La Morada and I've been wanting to go for a while, but I haven't got the chance since it's kind of far from me. Are there any other places like that, where they serve less commonly found regional dishes?

Finding good tacos and tortas is no challenge at all, but Mexico has so much more to offer than that and I want to experience that if possible.

I know that a lot of the Mexican population in NYC is from Oaxaca and Guerrero, so I'm surprised there aren't more places that specialize in the cuisine of those states. Or maybe there are, but I just don't know about them. And maybe there are also places that specialize in other parts of Mexico even if there isn't a large population from those states, such as say, Michoacan or Jalisco.

So if you have any recommendations, please share! It seems like the Mexican options around here are increasing more and more, which I'm happy about. Here in Nassau County, there are very few authentic taquerias even, thankfully there is now one in Hempstead which I will try soon.
