My brother and I grew up in metro NY in the '40s and '50s feasting on Chow Mein, Lobster Cantonese, etc.
from those carry-out places that dotted the area. They were cheffed by Cantonese cooks, I believe. When we moved to metro DC in the '70s, we were still able to find such chow. True, this style of food went out of fashion after non-Cantonese Chinese food became the rage after Nixon's detente with China in '74. In any event, all the places we used to find it in DC (the Ruby in Chinatown, a place in Arlandria on Mt. Vernon Ave., a place out on Rt. 50 in Fairfax) have disappeared. I'm about to visit DC in April, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a carry-out place in DC Metro that still cooks the old-style New York Chow Mein? Thanks a ton.
