On Saturday a friend and I came upon this place on Lassen just west of Sepulveda. What caught our eye was the banner proclaiming PUPUSAS. The outside of the place reminds me of an old-style Taco Bell.
There are several choices breakfast, fish/seafood, tacos, burritos, chili verde/colorado, carnitas, chilies rellenos, tortas, soups, salpicon, Salvadorean dishes - several types of pupusas, tamales, empanadas. Plantanos fritos, yucca con chicharon, pastelitos, then your regular burgers, pastrami sandwiches, etc.
You order and pay at the counter, sit down, and they bring you your food.
I ordered two of their Pupusas de chicharon w/beans & cheese and a carne asada torta. And a bottle of that apple flavored drink that Dommy! speaks of. I described it that way, and she knew exactly what I was talking about! My friend got a fish dish (not sure which one as they offer a few).
Mine came out: two delicious-looking (and even better tasting) pupusas with the marinated cabbage salad (best I have had so far) and the watery/runny red salsa that complements them so well. ABSOULTELY delicious!! The torta was stuffed with meat, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, mayo great as well. My order came to $9 and change, friends came to around $12 (I believe).
My friends fish was great also. Came with two freshly-made tortillas and rice, beans, salad. He had the orchata to drink (not the best we have had). He decided that when he comes back, he will be getting the pupusas (definitely the star of the show). Every table had at least one order of them on it.
Meal comes with chips and salsa the house salsa is extremely tomato-y, but after we mixed in a lot of the Tapatio and salt that was on the table, it became passable. I asked for a spicier salsa (salsa roja) and they brought one out, but we had to doctor that up as well with salt & lime. Salsa that came with the pupusas was really good.
We are both very glad that we came across this wonderful find will definitely be back.
