Is mesquite grilling dangerous? Alton Brown's grilling special said so.

I watched the Alton Brown one hour special on grilling over the weekend. Sporadically, his show puts in an interesting transitional printed fact on the screen, as he shifts from one scene to another. Toward the end of the show, a statement flashed on the screen that you should avoid grilling steaks with mesquite because the fire burns too hot and mesquite releases chemicals that are dangerous to eat. This was only on the screen for about five seconds, almost not enough time to even read it. I played back the same message about five times to make sure that I was reading it correctly.

This is not the "charbroiling creates carcinogens" trope. All high heat grilling supposedly does that, due to the charring process. This was something connected to the very nature of mesquite. Mr. Brown made no comment on this extraordinary message and it was only on the screen for five seconds. I tried googling it but found nothing, although as a 62 year old, my internet capabilities are not that good. Has anyone heard of this? What are the details?
