Just want to pass on my thoughts about Meson Iberia,a really nice Portuguese/Spanish restaurant in Island Park, close to Long Beach on Long Island. My wife and I started going there a few years ago after reading a wonderful review about it in Newsday and another a short while later in the NY Times.
Meson Iberia is a family run restaurant which has never disappointed us. Prices are what I would call moderate - entrees are in the $14-20 range; appetizers about $4-$9 - and I have always found the food to be delicious - with ample portions and a friendly serving staff (all seem to be related) and the restaurant is really clean. Our visit last evening was typical of the kind of meals we've enjoyed there. It seemed they offered at least 6 special appetizers and the same number of entrees in addition to their regular menu.
Although no prices were mentioned for any of the specials, I ordered two of them - an appetizer which was a "stew-like" dish of tripe and beans and my entree was a Portugese dish of pork and clams served with yellow rice. My wife ordered shrimp ajillo, another special appetizer, and her entree was her favorite paella valenciana, a menu item. All were really delicious. Best of all, when the bill came I happily found the "specials" were priced in-line with all the other menu listings. The one minor disappointment for the evening was that due to the inclement weather conditions they did not receive their delivery of Portuguese corn bread, another favorite of mine.
As you can probably tell, we enjoy this restaurant and have brought many of our friends there (it's about a 45 minute drive from our home). For those that might travel by LIRR, the restaurant is a 5 minute cab ride from the Long Beach station.
Meson Iberia is at 4335 Austin Blvd, Island Park; telephone 516-897-4911.
