We had a nice midweek dinner at Out of the Blue, the new BYO on 20th where Salt used to be. Overall, we were pleased. Menu was interesting and service was good. Highlights were the grilled radicchio salad, game hen stuffed with date and fig and a game hen bastilla (stuffed pastry). JugglerDave is a sucker for dishes that are two preparations of one thing like this. Creme brulee was eggy and yummy. The one miss was a weak capuccino mousse. Grilled octopus appetizer was really a salad, but still very tasty.
For NYE, we went to Meritage, owned by the same people. They had a 5 course menu at our seating for $69 (7 courses at later seating). Everything was exceptional and interesting. They did a fabulous job with my dietary restrictions, making great vegetarian dishes that were just as high-end as the menu dishes. Juggler Dave's favorite was the combo lobster and crispy-skinned red snapper with spicy americain sauce. The dessert sampler was great, especially the chocolate caramel flan. They also did a 5-glass wine pairing for $35.
