Need help with meringue

I really would like to make little meringue bowls or even one large one to hold fruit and whipped cream. I don't seem to be successful so far. Any tips or suggestions? I am using cream of tartare and a wire whisk - electric whisk. Seemed to me I beat it forever but I wonder if that's the secret. It never did really stand up but it was quite stiff. Thanks for any help.
