Went to Mercadito for a pre-theater bite the other night. The margarita with cucumber and chile was really good. The bass (sea? striped?) ceviche was nice, not extraordinary though. The carne tacos had nicely browned meat with a decent flavor, but the quacamole that came with was overwelmingly acidic--couldn't taste much else. I'd try the place again, though, since I got sense that other things could be good, and since I seem to recall some favorable comments about it on here from before. It's on 7th Ave South & Grove.
After the show we went to Employees Only for a bit more food. Had the octopus and smoked trout appetizer, the roasted beet salad, and the cremini whipped potatoes. The potatoes were delicious. The octopus was very tender and the trout had a good smokiness and firmness, but both that dish and the beet salad had an intense oily flavor to them somehow. The beet salad was otherwise unremarkable. The drinks menu is nice, though the drinks I've had off it have been good, not great. Love their cocktail glasses though--they're the old-fashioned kind with the rounded bowl, but they're heavier than usual. This place is on Hudson and Christopher.
