So last night my girlfriend and I went to Mercadito Grove. In short:
Food: very good
Prices: higher than they should be for tiny portions
The waiter let us know that the plates were small and designed for sharing, and that tacos were about 3 bites each. I've eaten my fair share of what I would consider regular-sized tacos in about 3 bites, so this sounded right to me.
However, the tacos were tiny! We started with guacamole which was good but had huge chunks of avocado in it. I like my avocado chunky, but chunks were bigger than the chips they came with - hard to handle.
And then the tacos. We split shrimp and al pastor tacos, and both were very tasty. The shrimp especially were sweet and perfectly cooked. But 9.50 for 3 tiny tacos? probably about 2.5 inches in diameter for the tortillas? Not to mention 8.50 for the smallish portion of guacamole (which I'm used to being overcharged for), and 9.50 each for two margaritas that were pretty skimpy on the tequila?
It's a shame because the tacos were very good, and I would have eaten several had they not cost so much for so little.
Later in the evening, though, we went to Cones. Wow. Go there now. I had mate and dulce de leche, she had vanilla and hazelnut, and they were perfect. Perfect texture, perfect flavor, perfect everything. Actually, the vanilla could have had a little more vanilla flavor if I had to nitpick. But wow. The best I've had in NY (i think better than Il Lab, Ciao Bella, CICF, and others that are also very good).
